So far looks like the captcha plugin was the culprit.
The members can now login and post.
Funny because at some point earlier, the drap and drop wasn't working (showing identical icons) so I disabled that part and just kept the math part and didn't think about it since nothing changed when I deactivated it before.
Also updated the following, just came in:
SP Version 5.7.3
Plugins-
Admin Bar 1.7.2.
Private Message System 2.4.

Well that's good news. The captcha was the nearest I could come up with based on the console error message.
I think it is almost certain that it is conflicting with another WP plugin (or theme) in some way as we have no other reports and tests here show it works as expected. Always worrying.
But good you are back up and running.
