So, I was able to manually add and then save the options (clicking "update"), but when I navigated away and then came back, the "a" was back.
Before I updated the core plugin, I updated the themes and plugins through the wordpress update interface and was getting errors before I realized I had to update the core plugin as well. I reinstalled TincyMCE after that...I don't know if that's at all related.
Thanks for your continued help...what else should I try?
yes indeed... There are two things to check of you can.
1 - The SFMETA table:
Just browse the table rows - there are not that many. If there are ANY where the column 'meta_type' has the value 'tinymce_toolbar' then delete those rows. There should be none. If there are then there will probably be two rows to delete.
2 - The SFOPTIONS table:
Locate the row where the 'option_name' has the value 'tinymce'. (Hint: if you sort the table by option_name backwards then it will be near the top!).
When you locate this row I am going to ask you to replace the content of the 'option-value' column. I will paste this below in a code block and the best way to do this to ensure accuracy is to click on the 'raw code' button an then copy the result in the popup window into the clipboard:
a:11:{s:6:"height";s:3:"360";s:7:"plugins";s:45:"inlinepopups,media,spoiler,spellchecker,paste";s:8:"buttons1";s:119:"bold,italic,underline,|,bullist,numlist,|,blockquote,outdent,indent,|,link,unlink,|,undo,redo,forecolor,charmap,|,image";s:8:"buttons2";s:0:"";s:11:"buttons1add";s:69:"media,|,spoiler,|,pastetext,pasteword,|,selectall,code,|,spellchecker";s:11:"buttons2add";s:0:"";s:4:"lang";s:2:"en";s:12:"rejectformat";b:0;s:3:"rtl";b:0;s:8:"relative";b:1;s:9:"dbversion";i:2;}
So replace the data in that column and then save the row. This is all much easier than it sounds!
If it still fails then I will start to suspect the integrity of the downloaded editor plugin...

Are you running the wishlist tags plugin? If so deactivate and then either add the Tiny settings manually or by uninstall and then activating.
If the settings 'stick' after that let us know. If you reactivate Wish list tags and the settings go away let us know that too. There has been some issues with wishlist tags causing this.
All right. We're in business!
I had to deactivate Wishlist Tags and update the settings manually in components > editor. After I had deactivated Tags, the settings were all blank except for Toolbar 1 which had ",wltags" or something similar in it.
Good thing my guy wasn't available right away.
Thanks for the fix, Brandon.
And thanks for everyone's help on it!
good news! some day we need to figure out what in the world that wishlist tags plugin is doing, but we dont have a copy of it - not using the tags part here...
