I selected "Do not use Akismet" on Admin bar and Changed Permissions as per your codex tutorial and it works as expected. All the posts from guests now gets posted directly.
This however is true only when "Do not use Akismet" on Admin bar is selected.
If I use 'Akismet' - i.e. 'Place Akismet marked spam posts into moderation' all the posts are marked as spam and added to Moderation or if 'Do not save Akismet marked spam posts' all the posts are deleted\rejected and they never go any queue.
Bottom line - Using Akismet option in Admin bar would treat all guest posts as spam.

strange... cannot duplicate that... we used it here (before memberships) just fine... and I use it on two other sites and I dont have that happening...
will take a note and do some research... but that is quite odd...
I dont mean anything by this, but what is the nature of your forum? is it a topic that akismet could potentially be thinking that these guest posts were spam?
