I can replicate this using my iPhone and no - it has never come up before. Actually - I think it is new.
The problem for us is that it also happens when I write a blog post and use the add media posting tools. The only relationship between the WP Add Media and SP Attachments is that they both use the third party plUpload library. So my first suspicion has to fall at the feet of that.
So - our first stop will be to open a bug report with plUpload and see what response we get.

I would call it errant - not broken.
The first thing to do is investigate what we know and where the problem may be. If you mean can we change plUpload code then no - we can't. The good news is that it happens on the WP media upload as well and WP has a lot more clout than we do.
First step though, we need to find out whether this is a mobile issue - i.e., the way mobile devices tore images. For all we know at the moment it has always been like this and just not been tried by any users - landscape images being more common that portrait.
So the research comes first

YS,
Yeah I do agree with you....It does work just has a bug...
Good point about the WP clout.
I believe this is Mobile only, at least as far as my testing goes....those are the results I'm getting.
Issue Confirmed on the following Devices:
-iPhone 6+ - Safari and Firefox
-iPad Mini - Safari and Firefox
Galaxay Tab7 - Native Browser and Firefox
I guess I'm surprised that you guys havent heard about the issue yet? If you ask my Portrait Images should just go ahead and die. I try to never take them....but there are many out there that will continue to do so. May need to use a disclaimer for now "Please only use Landscape Images...we are working on this bug"
Please keep me updated on this as you know more.
Many Thanks,
Matt V.
@yellow-swordfish is on it... and some discussions/research occurring...
but nope - havent seen it or been reported... and dont recall seeing it myself on my Android phone... will have to try again...

also, assume we really mean rotated here? I dont see the wrong orientation, but a rotation issue...
Can I get you to try uploading another image here? have tried a tweak which is working from my android...

Just found something out....issues still there with my iPhone. I used a picture that I took earlier today that is portrait, it rotated. However, I took a screenshot so you could see what I'm seeing and the screenshot stayed at the right orientation. The picture is a jpeg the screenshot is a png, which worked correctly. hope this helps?
Can't upload because they are above the limit....
yes, we know PNG works fine... its because of the exif data present in JPG... the rotation only occurs with JPG...
And on our site here, at least using android phones, it doesnt rotate anymore...
@yellow-swordfish will try ios devices in morning... take smaller pic 🙂 certainly you can set the max resolution on an iphone on a per picture basis?

On that last point the simple fact is that the minute you make an edit or change to a jpeg file then you have dented the overall quality. These days it is virtually unnoticeable but that did not used to be the case. Certainly at the kind of resolution an uploaded image in a forum or browser window will display at then there is no real loss.
If you iPhone picture is too big to upload then you can make it smaller via the basic editing tools supplied in the Photos app.
So - here is the reason for all this and as I do not know how 'techie' you are I will keep it simple!
Once upon a time, when digital cameras started to make it big - and quite probably at a time when they were already appearing in phones, images were stored in the orientation they were taken. That is, start at the top left hand corner and work down to the bottom right corner. So - as you can deduce - for landscape or portrait, the format of the saved file would be different. And all was well.
Then at some point, basically as a drive to improve the speed of saving and multiple shooting, it was decided that ALL photos would be stored as if taken landscape. No more trying to deduce the orientation from the way the phone was being used or saving in dual formats etc. Quicker and simpler. Always save landscape. And add the orientation in the EXIF data that travels along with a JPEG file.
So to decode the images, a third party app needs to read that EXIF data, determine the intended orientation from that and then run algorithms to display the image - rearranging the file, chunk by chunk, if needed to be displayed portrait. This is not necessarily hard, it just needs to be supported. And from my reading of yesterday, an awful lot of software, including well used and successful software, still does not do that.
Which includes plUpload. However, their support forums do yield the answer which we are testing at the moment on our support site. So hopefully - there is a fix on the way.
