removed for who? you as admin?
looking back (and not seeing it), have you provided us a link where we can check this out? vice a picture... and compare to your settings...
and just to be sure, what was removed? remember, its a recent topics with posts display, so if you get a new post in a topic, that topic will only be shown once... not once per post...

Just as an additional hint. I am referring to the changes I did and described in post 17. I said, I will wait some time and report back later. Result:
The number of posts shown via widget has increased over time, since I set the changes as explained in post 17.
As of today I have 48 posts shown via widget and the last one is 6 days old, so the backlog has increased. But there are still not 50 as set, just 48.
I guess the interdependency to these parameters does exist, the change in behaviour is obvious after I increased the cache for example.
But I am happy with the current status, the "missing 2-of-50" are no big deal and not worth further analysis from my side.
understand... still thoroughly confused as we cannot replicate either of this which is why we keep requesting more data....

Today it became 50 as it should be. But we are now on the evening of day 4 of a busy week with lots of posts in multiple threads. If the problem persists, the count will go down over the weekend again. Will report after the weekend. Maybe the number in the cache (Post 17) is the cause and solution at the same time.
My humble theory, maybe it helps:
The Cache must be big enough, to contain at least the requested number as different threads (topics as you call it).
So if one sets the widget to 50 and has the cache at 100, it would only work, if most of the threads have just 1-2 posts.
Now lets imagine, the cache is 100, but the last 80 posts were part just of *one* thread (topic). And before that, there were 20 posts in another thread.
In that scenario, there would be just 2 entries displayed in the widget, as the cache contains 100 posts, but just 2 threads!
Just a theory.
cache?? are you using a widgets cache plugin?? we dont cache anything there...

@mr-papa - Hari is referring to our topic cache and I think he may well have a valid point.
If you think of Apopas with his small number of topics - even with a big topic cache it is entirely possible that only a small pool of those topics get a new post.
As an example it is feasible - but rare and mostly unlikely - that a topic cache of, say 100, might still only yield a unique count of only 5 or 6 if there are few topics in the forum that receive a large number of posts. Rare and most unusual. All you could do here would be to up the topic cache size.
