The forum search seems to find information in the post part but not the topic? found that the advance search allows for a search on the post and topic.
Is there a way to set the default search to uses the post and topic?

You bet.
It is done by changing the default setting in the theme's template's file. There are a set list or parameters in the spHead.php file in the theme's /templates folder.
You would change this line to a 3
As you can see #3 demands more resources. The codex article http://codex.simple-press.com/.....earchform/ goes through this in more detail and shows all the lines that can be changed.
