BuddyPress Plugin Integration Beta

Do we have any BuddyPress users out there?  How about BuddyPress users that want a tighter integration and sharing of data between BP and SP?

Well, then I am happy to announce the new BuddyPress integration plugin – at least the first cut at.  I suspect it will continue to grow over time.

I would like to see if there are any users who want to help test our new BuddyPress plugin and help chart the future course for it.

Our initial plugin for BuddyPress includes these features:

  • optionally integrate in forum topics and posts into the BP activity stream
  • optionally share avatars between SP and BP.  Choose which to use on both or keep separate
  • optional links in the BP bar (wp or bp) to popular forum destinations
  • optional notifications in the BP bars for forum activity
  • have mentions in the forum show up in the BP mentions stream

some other functionality being considered is sharing of friends, profile integration, and more including looking at some BuddyPress plugin addons.  But that is where you guys come in.  None of us here are BuddyPress users.  Getting this plugin working was the first time I installed BuddyPress, so we want some feedback on what folks would like.

And of course, feedback on the current plugin state.

Anyone interested?  Please let us know here.  I should have a download of the plugin beta later today.

Thanks!

I manage a site that has SP & BP installed and wouldn’t mind testing this plugin. Really like the idea of integrated activity and mentions. One thing I would like to note that I didn’t see on the integration list is that when BP profiles are used in place of SP profiles the buttons for a users forum “topics started” & “topics posted to” should be moved into the BP profile so they can find them, least that’s what I did :) .

you can get the current beta version in the first post in this topic…

Thanks for offering to help…

I have just today started formulating a plan for profile stuff…  Its a bit trickier on what to do and how to handle…  Will keep your suggestion in mind – should be easy to do…

Still need to think on plugin options and best location/method for the user posts started and posted in buttons…

I’m getting a warning and error when posting a new forum topic with adding the activity to bp stream active-

Warning: Missing argument 2 for sp_filter_tooltip_display(), called in public_html/wp-content/sp-resources/forum-plugins/buddypress/library/sp-buddypress-activity.php on line 22 and defined in public_html/wp-content/plugins/simple-press/sp-api/sp-api-filters.php on line 1684

Fatal error: Call to undefined function groups_record_activity() in public_html/wp-content/sp-resources/forum-plugins/buddypress/library/sp-buddypress-activity.php on line 36

argh, looks like the warning is a messup, left off an argument… odd I dont get the warning though…

as a quick fix, can you change sp-buddypress-activity.php line 22 from

    $activity_content = sp_filter_tooltip_display($newpost[‘postcontent’]);

to

    $activity_content = sp_filter_tooltip_display($newpost[‘postcontent’], $newpost[‘poststatus’]);

that should handle the warning…

but the second error, I do not understand…  its a call to a standard buddypress function… not sure why it would be undefined for you (its not for me)…  which version of BP are you running?

I will upload a new version later today…

Version .3 did resolve the issues, and yeah I have groups turned off running bp 1.6.5. I will Check out the newest one tonight, I’m surprised there aren’t more people chiming in on this thread as I’ve seen this integration requested here and in various  other places in the past… not really surprised no one from over at bp helped though ;)

After checking out the plugin I’m not sure what else you could add.. I really have only used BP for profiles though, to allow activity on them, friends, and so forth, so someone who uses it more may have more suggestions. Anyways, adding the forum settings, subscriptions, watches, and mentions to BP is more than enough for me :) . I like that mentions can still be seen straight in the forum as well as subscriptions and watches. It is convenient no matter where you are. I stress tested the forum activity to the bp activity feed a bit, tried really long posts, polls, pictures, etc. and it worked for me with no errors. Also, between the settings that existed in the admin profile tab of SP to integrate SP and BP and the new settings in the plugin you can definitely fine tune the way you want the interaction to occur ;) .

great feedback!  Thanks – its appreciated…  I too have reached the conclusion that I have about covered it…  the only thing I might be interested in, and it could be at later date, would be if there were any must BuddyPress plugins out there that we wanted to support…  in the coming days, I will take a look, but as a BP newb, may not know any different…

The other thing I want to play with is the mentions…  right now, BP does the mentions by parsing the activity feed…  for the forum posts, I am using an excerpt of the forum post…  so if the mention were to come after the end of the excerpt it would not show up in BP mentions…  I really dont want full post content in the feed though…  so stuck between a rock and a hard place… likely to live with it… but might offer an option for the excerpt length…

thanks again for helping!

This is great! I’ve been needing something more powerful than bbpress for forums, but the BuddyPress integration was crucial. I joined just to see how good this works. I’ll try to help out where I can. Thanks again for building this!

So far so good on the code, no errors or unexpected things happening :)

Here’s my suggestions:
There’s a plugin that lets Twitter and Facebook users add their account to their profile using the BuddyPress profile fields. It might be worth checking out to see how they map fields and such and have that ability for forum signatures –
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-facebook/
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-twitter/

I use the Activity section of BuddyPress for user generated content creation – blog posts, images, etc. So, for me, I really like how bbpress integrates into buddypress. Instead of into the Activity, bbpress sets a separate menu tab in BuddyPress for the Forum feed. That way the Activity doesn’t get overcrowded with forum posts. However I can see how some users would want it to show it in the Activity. Maybe an option?
